Cheeseburger Pizza

While I like traditional pizza, I love to explore new twists on pizza, like BBQ Chicken Pizza and Spinach Artichoke Pizza.  When I posted my last pizza recipe, my friend John sent me his recipe for cheeseburger pizza.  I have been meaning to give it a try ever since.

His recipe had a whole wheat crust, ketchup for sauce, browned hamburger, American cheese, and pickles on top.  I took that idea and ran with it.  I used my basic whole wheat pizza dough recipe, but as always, you can use your favorite recipe or pick up some prepared pizza dough.  I like my cheeseburgers with mayonnaise and mustard, so I decided to create a dipping sauce to go with the pizza.  I put sweet relish in the dipping sauce instead of putting pickles on top of the pizza.  To top the pizza, I used my favorite burger veggies – tomato and red onion slices.  I also used a combination of tomato sauce and ketchup for the sauce.

Ingredients:

  • Whole wheat pizza dough
  • 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons onion, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • Dried thyme
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 8 ounces swiss cheese, shredded
  • Sliced tomato
  • Sliced red onion
  • 3/4 cup low fat mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet relish
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 450°F.  Lightly grease a 15 inch pizza pan (or baking sheet) and spread the dough to the edges of the pan.  Set aside and let the dough rise slightly while preparing the toppings.

Brown the ground beef in a large skillet.  Add the garlic, onion, and Worcestershire sauce and saute for 2-3 minutes.  Add a pinch of the dried thyme and a pinch of black pepper.  Set aside.

In a small dish (or measuring cup) combine the ketchup and tomato sauce.  Add a pinch of thyme to the sauce and stir to combine.  Pour the sauce over the dough, spreading evenly.  Top with the beef mixture.  Sprinkle the swiss cheese over the beef.  Top with the tomato and onion slices.

Bake for about 15 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden.

Meanwhile, combine the mayonnaise, relish, mustard, honey, and hot sauce in a small dish, stirring to combine well.

Serve the pizza with the dipping sauce and enjoy!
