Friday Favorites – Thanksgiving Guide (Episode 73)

2010-11-19_ThanksgivingGuide.jpg

I have hosted Thanksgiving dinner at my house for the past couple years. This time around, I have the year off. Yellowdog (our yellow lab, in case you were wondering) has to remain “calm” and is not allowed to play with kids, other dogs, and relatives for the next few months until she has fully recovered from her knee surgery. So, that pretty much means that there will be no big get togethers at my house for a few months, either.

That doesn’t mean I won’t be cooking, though! I plan to make a side dish or two, and of course I’ll be taking some sort of dessert. I will also be traveling with my handy dandy meat thermometer, which I believe is the key to a perfect Thanksgiving turkey. Whether it’s my kitchen or my mom’s, there’s no better place to be on Thanksgiving day!

Grilled Vegetable Tacos

We’ve been making a conscious effort to eat more vegetarian meals throughout the week. In comparison to many families, we don’t eat a lot of meat. But, I think we can do better. My goal is to cut back to having fish/poultry 1-2 times a week and meat no more than 1 time a week….

Roasted Winter Vegetables with Goat Cheese

One of the dishes I was served by Chef April Bloomfield at the Spotted Pig on my trip to NYC was a wonderful root vegetable soup. The soup she prepared was simple, but very flavorful, allowing the flavor of vegetables to stand out. Ever since, I have been in the mood to experiment with root vegetables….

Roasted Smashed Yams

I’m in a fall-inspired comfort food mood… Can you tell? I blame it on the weather.  We went to Boston this past weekend for a short vacation.  Well, we picked the wrong weekend. It was cold and windy, and it even snowed a bit on Sunday.  We were afraid we were going to get snowed in…

Beef Stew with Cinnamon and Yams

Last week we had a few of those quintessential fall days. You know the ones – sunny with crisp cool air during the day and chilly nights that are perfect for snuggling up with an extra blanket on your bed. Fall days always make me want a hearty, warming dinner. My solution?  Beef stew. This is…

Sweet and Smokey Corn Chowder

Often when I am trying to think of something to make for dinner, I start with a particular ingredient… like my very own Iron Chef challenge for one!  Tonight’s secret ingredient?  Corn. We picked up our CSA share today, and it contained four ears of corn.  Unfortunately, there has been an issue with earworms on…

Sweet and Spicy Oven Fries

On Sunday, the weather was nice and I made some grilled BBQ chicken.  To go along with it, I wanted something sweet and spicy that would compliment the BBQ sauce – so I decided to make some oven fries. I had a few yams that needed to be used, so I whipped up some sweet potato…

Shepherd’s Pie

Last week was really busy at our house, so I didn’t have a lot of time to make dinner. I made this Shepherd’s Pie a day in advance so that we had a quick dinner to heat up one evening.  It’s based on the Shepherd’s Pie recipe from The Sugar Solution Cookbook. Instead of regular potatoes, the…

Glazed Ham and Candied Yams

Glazed ham and candied yams are two of my favorite holiday foods.  This quick and easy version of my festive favorites has been scaled down to serve 4-6, and can be made any night of the week! Ingredients: 2 pound boneless, fully cooked ham 2 pounds yams, peeled and cut into 1″ pieces 1 1/4…
