Surprise! (60th Birthday Cookies)

Surprise! (60th Birthday Cookies)

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have noticed that I’ve been MIA for a few days… A few of you even called me out on it.

You know you tweet way too much when people notice that you’re gone for an afternoon. And, they wonder if everything’s OK. I’m fine. I’ve just been busy… Busy working on these cookies!

Normally, I would tweet while I’m working on cookies… Whether you like it or not, I like to give little sneak peeks of what I’m working on! But, this cookie project had to be a secret! It was a surprise for my dad’s 60th birthday… And, since he’s on Facebook and could potentially follow a link or two to Twitter, I kept everything quiet. I mentioned that I was making cookies (and I let a few friends in on the details via direct message), but I gave no details. Sometimes I can be sneaky!

My mom, sister-in-law, and I have been working on the details of the party (which was at my parents’ house!) for months. And, for the last week, I’ve been busy with baking and shopping for the party. I made around 100 (plus a few extras…) cookies for the party in a black, white, and red theme. Let me tell you… When it’s humid outside, and the air conditioning in your house is broken, black, white, and red royal icing is not a good idea. (Did I mention we just got our AC/furnace replaced? Oh, the joys of home ownership!) Fortunately, I managed to avoid the “bleed” and the cookies turned out alright.

I really enjoyed decorating the birthday candle cookies and the party hat cookies… But, I think I am getting into a circle cookie rut. I’ve been making entirely too many circle cookies lately, and I’m sick of them! It didn’t help that I had to pipe the number 60 over and over. Turns out that I think 6 is one of my least favorite numbers to pipe. I’m just saying.

Despite the heat and the noise in the house (naturally, they replaced our AC/furnace on Friday while I was frantically getting ready for the party), everything got done on time, and the party went off without a hitch. My dad was even surprised!

Now that I am done with these birthday cookies, I am looking forward to some fall-themed cookies to get myself out of my cookie rut… Is it too early for pumpkins?

Your cookies always impress me, you must have a pretty special Dad! I can’t imagine doing all of that writing! How does your hand stand up to it??? Belated Birthday Wishes to your dad!

    1. Actually, all of the lettering isn’t too bad on my hands! The secrets are to not overfill your piping bag (1/3 full), thin out your stiff icing (just a bit), and keep the piping bag tightly twisted at the top so you don’t lose pressure.

I love the colour scheme of the cookies and your party hats are just adorable as are all the different candles. Glad that the surprise was a surprise and I’m sure your Dad was just delighted with all the love and effort that went into all of these cookies.

    1. Hi, Candice – Unfortunately, I didn’t really have a chance to take photos from the party. It was a busy night, and I had my hands full most of the time.
