Summer Snacks (Trail Mix)

There’s something about summer that always makes me hungry for snacks. Whether I’m traveling by train, plane, or automobile, I have to have something to much on. In fact, even when I’m hanging out around the house I enjoy a yummy snack in the afternoon.

Most of us have our favorite summer travel snacks… My personal favorite is Twizzlers. Every time I travel I have to pick up a pack of Twizzlers to hold me over on the trip. My hubby’s favorite is trail mix. He’s always eying it up when we’re at the grocery store, but I usually refuse to buy the packaged stuff. It’s not that I don’t want my hubby to have his favorite snack… Quite the contrary!

The thing about packaged trail mix is that it’s full of raisins and peanuts. Don’t believe me? Go buy a package at the store, start eating it, and see what you’re left with. Once you pick out all of the “good stuff” I bet you’ll find yourself left with a half-empty bag containing mostly peanuts and raisins. It’s not that I don’t like peanuts and raisins… They are OK in moderation, but I don’t want them to be the star of my trail mix.

Instead, I make my own trail mix… I find most of the ingredients in the bulk section at the grocery store.  You can make trail mix with pretty much whatever you like.  Here’s my favorite recipe to get you started… Happy snacking!

Trail Mix

  • 1 cup dried mango, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 cup dried pineapple, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 cup dried banana slices
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 2 cups mixed nuts (light on the peanuts, please)
  • 2 cups peanut M&Ms (I much prefer my peanuts covered in chocolate)

Trail mix is simple… Simply dump all of the ingredients in a giant bowl and stir it up. You can store the finished trail mix in a big airtight container or divide it up into snack packs to go.  Enjoy!

I love love loooove trail mix. Whenever I can I try to buy a big bag and snack on a handful of it in the afternoon just to keep my energy and hunger down. It’s also simple to make too which makes it even more appealing. Though, not sure why I haven’t made it at home for myself before. hmmmm… I must correct that.

You definitely took all the best parts of trail mix and threw them together. Not that I don’t like peanuts and raisins…but peanut M+Ms, dried pineapple and dried mango – infinitely cooler.

You wouldn’t want me in the back seat of your car. Because I’m a child and would first inhale all the M&M’s. And, the other stuff. And, I don’t think I’d share.

  8. A great snack! trail mixes are always our favorite!
