Spicy Garbanzo Dip

If you’re looking for some healthy alternatives for your Super Bowl party this weekend, look no further!

As I mentioned in my last #10in10 post, one of my goals this week was to try to plan some healthy snacks to help me avoid the sweets in between meals. So, on Sunday afternoon, I whipped up this quick and easy garbanzo bean dip (I’m not going to call it hummus, because it isn’t really a traditional hummus). It’s a great source of protein, too, which is another one of my goals.  I think this will help me keep my snacking in check this week… Or at least I hope it will!

This is one of those recipes where I just made it up as I went, and it turned out quite well, if you ask me!  While I like hummus, I was in the mood for something a bit more Mexican. The thing is, I had purchased a large can of garbanzo beans (with great intentions of making hummus), so I decided to use the garbanzo beans in a Mexican-inspired dip. This dip would be wonderful with black beans or pinto beans instead of the garbanzo beans, if that’s what you have on hand!

Serve this dip with your favorite baked tortilla or pita chips at your Super Bowl party… I bet your guests won’t even notice that’s healthy!

Spicy Garbanzo Dip

  • 29 ounce can of garbanzo beans (chick peas), rinsed and drained
  • 4 ounce can of fire roasted green chiles
  • 2 small shallots, peeled and halved
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • 2 – 3 tablespoons of cilantro leaves
  • 1 teaspoon ancho chili powder
  • Kosher salt
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Combine all ingredients in a food processor.  Pulse until the all of the ingredients are incorporated and the mixture is smooth.  Adjust seasoning, and garnish with chopped tomato and additional cilantro, if desired.  Serve with baked tortilla or pita chips.

  2. I am usually not a fan of traditional hummus. This sounds amazing! I am loving the lime and ancho chili powder – I just bought some of that last weekend.

Looks amazing! I don’t like hummus very much, but this sounds really good. It might just fool me into thinking that I’m not eating hummus!

  9. it might not be a traditional hummus, but it sounds tasty and looks satisfying and delicious to me :) I have a surplus of pita breads to get rid of, and this may be just what i need to turn them into a super bowl snack. thanks :)

This sounds fantastic! I love jalapeno and cilantro hummus, and this sounds like a twist on the same idea. I’ll definitely try it out on Sunday.
