Challenging Cuisine Challenge

For some reason – one that I cannot seem to put my finger on – I am intimidated by preparing authentic Asian cuisine.  Perhaps it is that I have trouble finding the proper ingredients at the grocery store…  Or perhaps it is due to the fact that I only recently (in the last 2-3 years) discovered that there was more to Asian cuisine than Chinese takeout.  Whatever the reason, I find myself resorting to prepackaged, boxed mixes.

Typically, I am entirely opposed to using prepackaged mixes…  I bake my cakes from scratch, I make my own icing, I don’t use seasoning packets, etc. However, when it comes to Asian cuisine, I tend to give in.  Last week, I made Kung Pao Chicken and Snap Peas from a box of noodles. Although it was delicious, the only contribution I made was to stir fry some chicken breast and snap peas and stir them into the noodle mix I purchased at the store.

So, I have decided that I will finally face my fear of Asian cuisine.  While I cannot promise that there will be no more mixes (I do like them, and they can be nice in a pinch), I can promise that I will make an effort to learn how to prepare some more authentic dishes.  As I research Asian cuisine, I will be writing about what I’ve learned and (hopefully) posting some of the successful recipes.  If any of you have any favorite recipes or tips, let me know – I will highlight them in my blog posts (giving credit where due, of course!).

  1. You will do great! I had a fear of yeast for a while but I am proud to say that once I actually tried it and concentrated on what I needed to do, it worked out really well and my fear was conquered. I do still have some other things to work on :) One great cookbook that i learned about Asian flavors from (the only cookbook I’ve actually used) is Jean Georges and his recipes are very easy to follow.

If you need any ideas for ingredients or recipes let me know. Having an Asian husband and Mother-in-law gives me some pretty rockin resources! Good luck!!

You know, I really like the Annie Chun’s Soup Bowls if you’re looking for a simple, healthy Asian meal.
Good Luck on facing your fear :)

Looking forward to your adventures! You should see if your town has an Asian grocery and just jump in and buy some scary looking ingredients. Then you can get them home and Google to find recipes to use them in. I bet the Asian grocery and real Asian ingredients will be great inspiration.

Good luck! I’m with you, I only make things from scratch, but Asian cuisine also intimidates me! You can totally do it!
